Methodology

What it is
A fingerprint (citation and SHA-256 hash) of Laich, Fierro and Martin, "Production of Penicillin by Fungi Growing on Food Products", Applied and Environmental Microbiology 68(3), 2002. The article itself is not included.
Provenance
Published by the American Society for Microbiology in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, March 2002, volume 68, issue 3, pages 1211-1219, doi:10.1128/AEM.68.3.1211-1219.2002. The PDF that was fingerprinted is the copy served by PubMed Central for article PMC123731 (PMID 11872470).
How it was obtained
The PDF was downloaded on 1 November 2026 from https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC123731/pdf/1064.pdf, as recorded in the file's download metadata. It is 988,074 bytes and 9 pages, with SHA-256 f103c7eada2dad1cd2a6d9201423fefaa8047a5e0c741e8950cbdabdfebfd935. Only its citation and hash were deposited, in documents/fingerprint.txt.
Chain of custody
Received by the journal on 27 June 2001 and accepted on 12 December 2001. The PDF's internal metadata records it was typeset with XPP on 14 February 2002. It is distributed by PubMed Central, from which it was downloaded for this record.
Known gaps
The article is copyright 2002 American Society for Microbiology, all rights reserved, and is not openly licensed, so this archive holds only its fingerprint. Readers must obtain the article from the publisher or PubMed Central. The hash matches one specific PDF; other copies of the same article, such as the publisher's own file or a later re-rendering by PubMed Central, may differ byte for byte while carrying the same text. The article's methods and results were not checked by this archive.

Context

This record fixes the identity of a 2002 microbiology paper on penicillin production by fungi used in, or commonly found on, cheese and cured meats. The authors, at the Universidad de Leon in Spain, report that Penicillium griseofulvum produces penicillin and carries a complete penicillin gene cluster, and that Penicillium verrucosum carries only part of one. Because the article is under copyright, the archive does not hold its text. What it holds is a timestamped hash of one exact PDF. Anyone with a copy can hash it and compare: a match shows the file is the same one recorded here, unchanged since this record was made.
